Kitten’s Birthday Party

I’ve come bearing gifts.  Or at least .gifs (see what I did there?)  Pictures of Kitten’s birthday party!  These are only a few, as she was literally surrounded by family the whole day.  And I don’t “own” my family, so I try not to post pictures of my family without their permission, etc. so you’ll (sadly) get only a small view of the festivities.  But!  Pictures!  Yay!

Here’s Kitten when we got to the park grounds. She was so excited to wear! the! Tutu! I had let her try it once once before, but otherwise denied her requests to wear it around the house. So it was super special, come party day. She’s also sporting her #3 shirt (made by me), a pair of Abby Cadabby Pony-O hair streamers (bought from etsy) and a pair of Abby Cadabby running shoes (I had a bit of a problem, leading up to the party. Ha ha).

Kitten all dolled up for her party

Here’s a picture of us decorating the picnic site. We got stopped by the park police, because they were wondering what was going on, as they don’t usually allow people to set up tables and stuff (we only had one). They let us off the hook though, as it was a kid birthday party (and we obviously were NOT drinking). I loved our balloons and the few decorations that we did have.

Getting Set Up

We had three games for the kids to play, an egg race (where you race across the grass with an egg in a spoon), a cotton ball race (where you blow through a straw to push a cotton ball across the ground – we used a blanket), and a pinata. Most of the kids had a probelm with the egg race, but it was still fun to do. I dyed the eggs before hand.

We did have a pinata, which was totally fun. It was a pull-string pinata, which totally failed. Kitten’s uncle ended up ripping it open so the kiddies could get the candy. I think that they enjoyed it, even though it didn’t work quite right. You can’t see it, but Birdie had an Abby Cadabby outfit on too. 🙂 We’re all about the matchy-matchy. For those who are curious, I am wearing Birdie in my new Ergo, in Galaxy Grey. She likes it most of the time, but sometimes she just wants to be FREEEEEEEEEEE…

Pinata, ready to go

We had cupcakes for cake (for ease of eating outside). I ended up not doing anything fancy or Abby Cadabby themed. I really wanted to do faces, but couldn’t figure out how to do the eyes. Well, I could have ordered candy eyes, but didn’t have time to get them in. Anyway, it’s no matter. They were fine, and gorgeously coloured inside!

Anyway, now Kitten is three, and SOMEONE told her that 3 is apparently much more dramatic than two ever was. ::sigh:: Oh well. Anyway, hope you enjoyed the pictures!

Coming Together

I’ve been very proactive in preparing for Kitten’s birthday party this year.  A few weeks ago, she picked out her theme (Abby Cadabby), and tonight we picked up the remainder of the “stuff” we need for the party.  Including a 2 foot tall Abby Cadabby pinata!  Which I have to store for over a month (I have no idea where to put it so it doesn’t get ruined and the cats don’t get after it).  I have a few things left to pick up for treat bags, I have to figure out how I’m decorating the cupcakes (but I know what the insides will look like – more on that another day), and I have a few things left to pick up or make for the big day.  Specifically, a #3 shirt for Kitten, a tutu and matching magic wand, and the stuffing for the pinata (seriously, how do you make that little ~ above the N when you’re on the computer?  Gah.).

I’m very excited about the party, but not nearly as excited as Kitten is!  I can’t even tell you.  She loves to talk about “July’s Birthday Party!  In the park!”  I don’t think she realizes that it’s going to be HER birthday, not someone named “July”.  Ha ha.  Pretty much everything she loves right now is Abby Cadabby, and we’re really doing it up this year.  I have very well preserved memories from as early as three, so I know that she might actually remember this party, so I want it to be good.  Not too over the top, but good.

So I’m feeling really productive about her party.  I know I’m going to have to do some experimenting on the cupcake decorations, because I just don’t know how I’m going to decorate these cupcakes.  I could order some printed edible icing things, but they’re kind of lame, in my opinion.  At least on cupcakes – they look cool on sheet cakes (we’re opting for the easiest in eating options, seeing as how we’ll be at the park).  I thought about trying to make each cupcake look like Abby’s face, but that sounds like a lot of work, and I’m not sure that I”m that talented.  I thought that there were some stick things you could poke in the cupcakes, but I can’t seem to find any online now.  I could buy a 4 pack of cupcake rings, but only 1 of the four are Abby, so I’d have a lot of other Sesame Street character’s left over.  ::sigh::  If you have any ideas, let me know.  🙂

In other news, Birdie slept for 10 hours in a row last night.  10 hours!  I know!  I don’t expect any kind of repeat performance, but dude.  It was awesome.  It would have been MORE awesome if there wasn’t a car alarm beeping for over half an hour in the morning (before I had to get up)… but you know.  I was feeling like leaving a VERY passive agressive note on the car, but decided it wasn’t worth the effort.  Seriously, though, I moved away from downtown for a reason, and car alarms are part of that reason!  So annoyed.

I have no new pictures for you today, but have patience, Young Grasshopper… I just have to put new batteries in my camera.  Heh.

THINGS  TO CATCH UP ON:

Hello people!  I have been knitting.  A lot, in case you were wondering, so I have some pictures for you (cue rejoicing):

Another skirtie for another client – very fun knit, and had approximately 1 yard of yarn left!  Phew!

Another Skirtie!

Socks, for a client:

2×2 Ribbed scarf in grey alpaca blend. I really like this scarf, it’s so soft, but it sheds a wee bit and that annoys me. Good thing it’s not for me!

Cold Mountain Stole – my first lace-weight project. This one has been on the needles for a while, but it’s my back up projects – not something I work on all the time. I have had had some errors in it, but for the most part I am ok with it. Frankly, I don’t want to go back and redo any of it. I wasn’t smart enough to put in lifelines as I went, so I’ll have to start doing that with the next pattern section. (this is only 2 pattern repeats in the FIRST section, there are three more sections after this, each with 3 repeats in them)

Here are some shorts I did for a client. I don’t love how the yarn pooled, but it was kind of impossible to work with. I only had one ball and despise working from both ends of the ball (usually turns into a giant mess). The client is happy enough with them, so I’m glad about that. I tried out a garter stitch gusset, and found that I really like it, and the reason that I didn’t like it before was because I had done it wrong! Ha ha ha…

Colleen's Summer Storm Capris

I made this ridged lace cowl for myself. I super love the colours, and if you remember from before, it took me a long time to decide what to do with it. It was my first EVER $$ yarn purchase ($20 for a ball), and it was hand-dyed just for me. I super love how it came out.

If you are looking at that picture thinking “geez, Kait, it looks like you’ve gained weight”, you’d be correct. About 3 pounds. But not only have I gained weight, I am gaining a NEW PERSON. So yes, pregnant (although I’m pretty sure that EVERYONE already knows, but you know, in case I missed any one).

Here are the things that everyone cares about:

  • I’ll be 9 weeks along tomorrow (Tues).
  • I have been nauseated constantly, but have really only thrown up once.  This is a significant change from when I was pregnant with Kitten, as I think I only felt sick once or twice, and never puked.
  • I’m not sleeping very well because my belly has already popped out and I’m fairly uncomfortable laying on my tummy.  I am grumpy about this because I still have 31 weeks (!!!) to go and be uncomfortable.
  • Rob and I are very excited, but we haven’t really told Kitten yet.  It’s a very long time still until the baby is born, and I don’t think she has much of a concept of time yet.  We will tell her once it becomes more obvious, and especially once she can feel the baby moving.  Presently, I am trying to help her understand that Mommy doesn’t like to have her tummy touched/kicked/pushed on, and that she needs to NOT jump on the couch that Mommy is sitting on.  This is hard for her, but harder for me to keep any kind of food down during the bouncing around! 😉
  • I have my first midwife appointment on Wednesday, and I am very excited.
  • We don’t get our first ultrasound until sometime in October (mid to late Oct. if you’re keeping score at home).
  • I am wearing maternity pants, because I can’t seem to get my regular jeans to do up.
  • I’m a full size smaller than when I had Kitten, which is very exciting, except that I have very few maternity clothes that fit.  I’ve been gifted some beautiful, gently used things, for which I am especially grateful.
  • Yes, we’re picking out the names already, and no, I won’t share them.

Things, otherwise, are continuing as normal.  Kitten’s birthday is today… I can’t believe she’s 2 already!  Blows my mind.  Once I get some pictures of the festivities, I’ll put them up.

Strawberry Shortcake is NOT my Friend

Here’s a fun Public Service Announcement for you:  The strawberry shortcake scented party stuff will make you want to throw up.  Just so you know.  And, the balloons don’t even smell remotely like strawberry, but much more like paint thinner.  Yum!  I’m just glad that the cups/plates/napkins didn’t stink.  That would have been terrible.

Kitten’s party was a lot of fun on Saturday – we had about 35 people out (including kids), so we had a FULL house.  It was awesome to see so many people come out to her party.  We mostly just sat around and visited, although I did make introductions, as well as we opened presents and had cupcakes (girl child got SPOILED!).  I don’t have much to report in regards to good stories from the party, so I suppose that I’ll just leave you with the pictures, instead.

Oh – did I mention that Kitten is walking?  It started last Wednesday, a few days before her party.

Did I mention she walks?

Busy Lady

Kitten was up early today (and I think I woke her up during her nap), so she went off to bed really early tonight.  We tried to keep her awake, but she was just getting grumpier and grumpier, so we just succommed and put her to bed.  If anything, I’ll be paying for it in the morning.  Oh well, nothing to be done about that now.

What this means, though, is that I get to put up a blog post!  I haven’t been all that active lately because I’ve been busy.  Doing stuff.  Kitten’s birthday is coming up quite fast (17 days!), and I have butt loads of stuff to do.  First, I have to clean my house.  I’m going room by room putting all the crap away, and doing a thorough clean.  My theory is that the day or two before the party, I can go back through the house and do a really quick surface clean/de-clutter and it still should look pretty good from this cleaning.  The other day?  I totally got the whole living room done.  Today?  I only got the kitchen floor clean and the table cleared off.  I don’t think that the kitchen was THAT much dirtier, it was just more tiring, maybe?  Oh well.  I also got a lot of Kitten’s baby book up to date.  That was really great.  I am stumped (ha ha) on how to draw her family tree.  My family is convoluted that I think I’m just going to skip it.

So, in addition to all this crazy party planning* I’ve been hard at work.  Remember how a long time ago I started a quilt for Kitten?  Well, it was a good thing I did – it turned into her birthday present, and it is completed, people!  I am so happy with how it turned out, and so proud that this quilt didn’t take me 3 years like the other one did (ha ha).  Without further ado, feast your eyes:

Kitten's Quilt

Quilt Close Up

Isn’t it lovely?  It was a lot easier than I thought it would be, and I was grateful that it didn’t require the precision that some of the other quilts I have made required.  That said, I think it’s time that I start a new quilt, and it should be a middling difficulty quilt.  Something that’s mostly squares, I think.  I saw some awesome Pokemon fabric at the store the other day, but Rob doesn’t want a quilt (he’s never cold).  So I’m not sure what kind of quilt to make.  Hmmm… I should have another baby so I can make a quilt!  Ha ha!

I also embellished a birthday shirt for Kitten.  I will say that I can’t take the credit for the idea, it was My Other Blog’s idea – or at least that’s where I saw it.  But I fell in love with the idea and decided to start my own tradition.  I thought that I would do the shirt to match the theme of the birthday.  This year, it’s going to be Strawberry Shortcake (2.0, because this SS is not the SS that I remember).

Birthday Shirt

I am so excited for her to wear it, you have no idea.  I’m really impressed, you can get a t-shirt at walmart for $3.  That’s cheaper than anywhere else I’ve ever looked.

Anyway, so that’s what’s new here.  I’m counting down the days until my baby is big (17!  ::cry:: ), and trying to clean the house.  And finish the baby book.  And make red velvet cupcakes for the party because I’m an overachiever.

*I just wanted to say that my sister ROCKS.  She was at the party store and called to tell me that the store is FULL of Strawberry Shortcake stuff, even stuff I had never seen before.  She was even so kind to pick a few things up for me that I wasn’t able to get at the other store.  I lub her long time!
